小龍の涙

June 1, 2020・Tanka

Published Version (JP):

小龍の涙

風が吹く
小龍の涙
今見える
明日の約束
は悲しくない

English Translation:

the small dragon’s tears

wind blows
the small dragon’s tears
can now be seen;
the promise of tomorrow
is not sad

小龍 implies a meaning of “small dragon”, but it can also be the name of a person.

The small dragon is crying, but the promise of tomorrow is not sad… I really like this idea.

今日も

June 2, 2020・Free Verse

Published Version (EN/JP):

今日も

pulled along by the current,
I close my eyes
dreaming gently of another time
still waiting to be realized, another time
still waiting to be born…
いつも探している僕
君の姿を
闇の中で, you speak
but I cannot hear, you dream
without me,
その日…
毎日の夢見てた
そして君の涙
なぜか僕の顔に流れる…
the days go by, 意味がない
and I’m still searching for you
and I’m still searching for you
今日も僕が待っている

English Translation:

today, too

pulled along by the current,
I close my eyes
dreaming gently of another time
still waiting to be realized, another time
still waiting to be born…
the me who is always searching
(for) your figure
within the darkness
, you speak
but I cannot hear, you dream
without me,
that day…
I was dreaming of everyday
and your tears
for some reason fall on my face…

the days go by, there is no meaning
and I’m still searching for you
and I’m still searching for you
today, too, I am waiting (for you)

This was the first time in a long while that I wrote a mixed-language piece. The writing itself was not so hard, but translating the Japanese parts to English for these notes was kind of difficult… I felt like there were many things that got lost in translation. For instance, in the published version there are some cross-language rhymes: “without me” and “その日” rhyme, also “the days go by” and ”意味がない”. I also translated it not quite literally in some places so that the English would make sense. I think the published version flows better and is more poetic, but that’s fine!

I would like to write more mixed-language poems in the future. The prospect is a bit scary and I know there will be less readers who understand, but I think there is a whole new world to be discovered here.

nothing else

June 3, 2020・TankaCompiled in 『because we will meet again』

The last two lines, “for you and for everyone,/there is nothing else but love”. I think it would be wonderful if everyone lived like this.

black and blue

June 4, 2020・Free VerseCompiled in 『because we will meet again』

What is black and blue? The “quiet night” but also the “beaten man”… In this poem, I wrote from the perspective of spirits, dead people looking down on those who still live, and the beaten man gazes back up at them. “We know he wants to join us/but you can’t bear to pull him to his feet” because it is not his time to die, “because he needs to live another day” – this is the story. Sometimes, living people want to die, but sometimes it is not your time. You have to stand up alone and go on living.

life cycles

June 5, 2020・Tanka

People change over time – that’s a given. Sometimes you find yourself looking back at the person you used to be. Sometimes that person is hard to face. Sometimes that person becomes the one who saves you in the end. “The hearts that time has transformed,/now accepting change again” – this is important.

overcome

June 6, 2020・Tanka

When you look out toward the ocean, toward the horizon, and it just seems expansive and endless… when you look over at the face of someone you love while you are doing something together, and you just think “this is such a wonderful thing we’re doing” and you want the moment to last forever… These are the thoughts behind this poem.
