Synchronicity (Part 2)

“Hey, wait up!” the boy called from behind him. “Tattsun!”

Tatsuo paused and glanced over his shoulder. “What?”

“Let me walk with you.”

“Okay.” Tatsuo waited for the boy to reach him before he continued his steady stroll along the side of the street.

“Where ya going?” the boy asked. “Home?”

He shook his head. “Nah.”

“Cram school?”

Tatsuo sighed. “You talk too much. I’m going to visit my grandma.”

“Oo-ooh,” the boy said, impressed. He lifted his large backpack up higher against his shoulders and gave a whistle. “Ditching tomorrow then?”

“It’s not that far,” Tatsuo replied irritably. “I should be able to make it back. And anyway, that’s not ditching.”

“Hey, ya know, you did good in math today.”

Tatsuo flushed at this sudden change of tactics. “Okay, hold up, Daisuke, what’s up with you? What do you want?”

“Nothin’, swear.”

“You don’t usually walk with me afterschool. What’s the matter? Nowhere else to go?”

The boy squinted and screwed up his face some. “Nah, not really, I guess not.”

They paused at a crosswalk and waited for several cars to pass.

Tatsuo sighed. “Come with me to my grandma’s?”

“Sweet! I mean, I’m down, yeah, sure, if you want, if she doesn’t mind…”

“She doesn’t care who I bring. Might as well go. Do you have clothes and stuff?”

“Mmhmm, yeah, always. We taking the overnighter?”

“Yeah,” Tatsuo nodded. “Got quarters?”

“Maybe.” The boy fished around in his pockets for a while. “No.”

“It’s okay, I got some. You don’t ride the bus much, do you?”

“This is the stop I get on, right over here. The bus usually comes fifteen minutes after school ends, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long, but if there’s an–”

“Tattsun,” the boy interrupted.

“Ya got anything to eat?”

“No. We can eat at my grandma’s.”

Tatsuo sighed again. “You know what, Daisuke?”

“You aren’t so bad.”

The boy’s face lit up. “Really? You think so?”

Even after they got on the bus, he was grinning from ear to ear.
